This project is designed to give students
the opportunity to master a topic in American history, design a lesson, and
teach elementary school aged students. It is commonly known that teaching
material is the best way of learning it. What many do not know, however, is how
excited elementary students get when the big high school students come to visit. Working with groups of fourth grade students always promises to be an interesting
experience.
High school students select groups and be assigned a topic including
the Great Migration, Jazz Age, Harlem Renaissance, Josephine Baker, Booker T.
Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, Harlem Renaissance Literature, etc. Groups teach 15 minute lessons in one of four stations posted in each elementary school room. The elementary school students rotate, giving them a new perspective on the Harlem Renaissance and the high school students a chance to shift teaching roles. The project is worth 140 points and represents the third quarter project. The directions and resources on this website are the best friend of student groups and resemble a treasure map to a fulfilling experience.
